Volunteering For Teens
It can introduce you to the exciting world of health care
The Teen Volunteer Program -- a supervised volunteer experience -- can be very rewarding for the teen volunteer, hospital patients, visitors and staff.
Deadline for the 2008 Fall session is July 15, 2008. No applications will be considered for the fall after that date.
LVH-17th & Chew Street campus does
not have a student volunteer program during the school year.
Program Goals:
- To provide a source of
reliable assistance to patients, visitors and staff, thereby enhancing the quality of care.
- To introduce you to the health care environment and stimulate your interest in the many opportunities available for careers in the medical field.
Requirements:
- Applicants must be at least 14 years old and have successfully completed eighth grade
- Satisfactory recommendation from your school counselor and/or other school representative
- Properly completed applications, parental permission forms and a health verification form ( including a physician's signature).
Applications NOT completed in their entirety will not be accepted.
- Serve a minimum of 60 hours in a twelve-month period commencing on your volunteer orientation date (no service hours will be released to you or to your school until 60 hours have been completed)
-
For volunteers starting in the summer, we require a minimum of 32 hours or one 4-hour shift per week for eight (8) weeks during the summer - completing the full 60 hours within one year from the date of orientation.
-
For volunteers starting in the fall or spring, we require a minimum of one shift and completion of the full 60 hours within one year from the state date. Depending on the assignment, it will take approximately 4- 5 months to complete your 60 hour commitment.
-
Ability to fulfill the commitment of at least one shift per week
-
Ability to ensure adequate transportation to and from the hospital
-
Complete the necessary TB (tuberculosis) testing requirements
-
A clear Pennsylvania Criminal History check
-
Neatness in appearance/cleanliness and strict adherence to the volunteer dress code including the purchase of a uniform
-
Mandatory completion of volunteer orientation/training
-
Keen interest in helping and in the hospital
Due to the substantial investment of time devoted to your orientation, training and screening, please consider carefully whether you can commit to the minimum service requirements. When you agree to participate as a teen volunteer, it is assumed you will arrange your other activities so they will not conflict with your scheduled hospital shift.
